Helpful Horsey Hints

These are our horses and these are their stories. Some of our babies need sponsors and/or donations for products that support their care.  If you are interested in sponsorship, please contact us! Please remember even the small donation makes a big difference for those here at LCR, thankyou.

Bandit

Bandit

Bandit is our aging (30+/- years old) herd patriarch.  He came to us in the winter of 2003 when a horse dealer decided he was too old to be used as a camp horse. Fortunately for Bandit (and us!), the dealer thought of Cathy first before sending him "away". Lame, unkempt, and underweight, his first year with us was tenuous. We weren't sure he'd even survive the winter. But survive he did and he is now fully retired at our farm, his only duty to rule his herd and to occasionally babysit some youngsters learning how to groom!

UDATE - Bandit came through the winter with flying colors. He has not dropped an ounce and I believe it is safe to say he has probably gained a few. He remains true to his girls Daisy and Silky.

Gracie

Gracie

Gracie is a 15+ year old grade Appaloosa mare and is about as steady and bombproof as horses come. She didn't come to us that way, though.  She had a tendency to be hot but after a year of retraining to slow her down she has become the most wonderful horse.

UPDATE - Gracie is doing wonderful and is eager to hit the trails. She has come through the winter in excellent health.

MAYDAY

MAYDAY is just a wonderful addition to our ever-growing family.  She is a beautiful paint mare with an eagerness to please.  At just 16 years of age, Mayday comes to us with the hope that she will make a great addition to our childrens programs.  She has become a farm favorite.(one of about a dozen).  We would like May's mom to know that she is doing well and seems to have found herself a beau.  Cesar is the gelding of choice for a couple of the ladies here, after all, who could blame them.

Ryan

Ryan is a really sweet 16.2h 19 year old chestnut Saddlebred who was owner-surrendered this spring.  He is chronically foundered and not likely to be ridden again. Our efforts right now are concentrated upon getting/keeping him pasture sound. Ryan, of all of our horses, really needs a sponsor very soon so that he can get corrective shoeing he needs. He is also on a number of supplements to minimize the inflammation and pain associated with his condition.  He is a sweet guy and has much energy and spirit in spite of his lameness.

UPDATE - Ryan continues to mend and remains so ever gentle. He has been receiving massage therapy which seems to be working well.

Cady

Cady

Cady is a sweet 20 year old Shetland pony donated by the same great folks who donated Cody to us (Cody has since passed away). She is just the right size for the really little ones to work with. She is gentle and lets them lead and groom her.

UPDATE - Oh our sassy little Cady smallest of all but takes not gruff. She is doing wonderful and loves to see her Victoria coming.

Caesar

Caesar is a handsome 15.3h 15 year old Appaloosa gelding that was donated to our program on August 27th.  His owner felt that he would be a good addition to our program. Unfortunately, Caesar has been diagnoses as having Navicular syndrome.  We have consulted with a barefoot trimmer who has agreed to help us treat this condition. We are very hopeful that we can get his unsoundness turned around so that he can have a bright future here!

UPDATE - Caesar has responded well to both the barefoot trimmer and the hands on healing being given. Thankyou Katherine and Mary for all you have done. Now if he could just get the girls (Gracie and Mayday) to give him a rest !
Caesar has been fortunate enough to receive partial sponsorship!!  Thank you so much Ashley, Ceasar will be able to continue to get the extra attention he so desperately needs thanks to your gift.

Silky

Silky comes to us from a childrens camp. She is very loving and willing to please. She has problems with lameness and loves to crib.

UPDATE : Silky has had some dental work done and this has eliminated some of her discomfort as her back teeth where about an inch plus to long. She is being treated for her lameness with massage therapy and vitamins and this seems to being helping a great deal.

Bella

Bella

Bella, A gorgeous sweet 15 year old thoroughbred came to us from Windsor.  Her mom Susan needed a place for Bella to be able to come to live out her years with a purpose.  Bella has a congenital abnormality known as kissing spine.  She can not be ridden but we have found a job for her and she really seems to like it.  With the best ground manners I have ever seen in a thoroughbred, she has become one of the best "hands-on" horses here at the ranch.  She clips, bathes, trailers and cross-ties, and she will stand all day and let the kids groom her and pick her feet.  Tough life but hey, someone has to do it.  Bella has been a godsend to us.
